Ørestad is the largest building site in Scandinavia and one of the greatest city development projects in Europe. It contains apartment building, public and private institutions and businesses.
The width of Ørestad is approx. 650 yards and the area totals 3,7 million square yards. Ørestad will be developed over the next 20 years.
At least 80.000 people will be working in Ørestad, 20.000 people will be living in Ørestad and 20.000 people are already studying in Ørestad. The neighbourhood contains various forms of life, culture and inhabitants. This defines the area as an experimenting and innovating forum for lifestyle and culture.
Ørestad is located between Copenhagen Airport and the City of Copenhagen. This vantage position makes the new town a major traffic junction of the Ørestad Region. Its accessibility makes Ørestad an integrated part of the urban area of Copenhagen and it is thought to contribute to the long-term development of Copenhagen. Ørestad provides ample spaces for new constructions that could not be fitted into the existing quarters of Copenhagen - due to their mere size.
Ørestad is divided into four parts, and Ørestad Nord, the northern part of Ørestad and the closest to the old city centre of Copenhagen, is the furthest in the building process and is expected to be finished in 2013.
Vision for Ørestad North / Crossroads Copenhagen
Ørestad North is a unique crossroad where people and creative ideas get together, and where knowledge is developed and used.
Ørestad North will become a diverse and experimental city district where physical proximity between culture, business, universities and homes generates life around the clock. Straddling traditional boundaries, it will be a zone of inspiration for new projects, new products, new forms of social interaction and knowledge.
Ørestad North is to be an international powerhouse of research, growth and user-driven innovation. An area that stimulates quality of life, business and welfare as its people, develop and benefit from advances in information and communication technology.
User defined innovation - a working process
The conceptual outline for Ørestad Nord states that the area must be an experimental centre for new lifestyles and urban spaces in the network society. Cutting across occupational groups and lines of business, Ørestad Nord will generate both ideas and contacts that are capable of spawning new sorts of social life, projects and products.
Ørestad Nord Gruppen worked with urban development in Ørestad Nord 1999-2011 in order to fulfil these strong visions for the area seeking new ways of working with city planning and urban design. Ørestad Nord Gruppen consisted of public and private companies, the inhabitants of the area, educational establishments, among which are two of the major universities in Denmark, and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Danmarks Radio.
These partners are all either living, working, studying or building in the north of Ørestad.
Ørestad Nord Gruppen strived to create a common ground for an interdisciplinary way of cooperating and is seeking a dynamic development of knowledge between the neighbourhoods\' different "knowledge pools", business life, public and private institutions, organizations and societies.
Ørestad Nord has achieved national and international recognition as an experimental lab for testing new ways of working with movable and changeable public city spaces.
These experiments is of great use for the future planning process in the rest of Ørestad, and for other innovative developers around the world.
